People of Sai Baba Nagar near BMC ground on Orlem Church Tank Road in Malad (W) area on Saturday lynched a suspected robber,while two others managed to flee,police said.
The three were wandering suspiciously when some local residents noticed them. When questioned,they became nervous and ran away. People gave chase. Two of them managed to flee,but the third,in his twenties,was caught. The enraged people tied him to an electric pole and thrashed him. By the time we received the information and reached the spot,he had died, said Malad police official.
D Jadhav,a local resident and member of the mohalla committee,said residents were angry due to frequent thefts. I once nabbed a thief while he was trying to steal jewellery from a shop in our area. We have informed the police about our concerns. Petty thefts continue, he said.
Rajan Dange,another resident,said thieves generally struck at houses after midnight and latched the doors from outside before carting away articles from the verandah. They generally carry away bicycles,water drums and other items placed on the verandah. The perpetrators are rarely caught. When they found one,they vent their fury on him, he said.
We have recorded the statements of residents. On the basis of the statements and testimonies we will make arrests, said Deepak Phatangare,inspector,Malad police station.
