After facing flak for not marking more than 70 per cent of the heritage structures in the draft development plan (DP) 2014-34, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will include the list in the revised plan, officials confirmed. Top officials said though the structures would not be marked in the maps, the list will be attached as a reference to the revised plan to be released by the end of this month.
A senior civic official said, “We cannot mark the heritage structures as grades will change and there can be a possibility of new structures being added to the list. We will, therefore, attach the list along with the maps to provide due importance to heritage structures.”
Almost 70 per cent of the heritage structures in the city were left out of BMC’s 20-year vision for Mumbai, announced in February.
Besides landmarks such as the Marine Drive precinct and old Town Hall, the plan did not demarcate several prominent Grade-I structures such as Prince of Wales Museum, Elphinstone college and the General Post Office, Grade II buildings including Police Commissioner’s office and Capitol cinema and Grade-III structures, the old Reserve Bank of India building and the Radio Club. There are 633 Grade I, II, III heritage structures and precincts listed currently and were notified two decades ago. In 2012, following a detailed revision of the heritage list, 894 additional structures and sites were proposed to be notified. However, almost all the 894 structures were found missing from the DP.
BMC, which was asked to revise the DP in four months is expected to submit the report by August-end. Officials, however, have confirmed that the civic body will seek an extension.
