Questions raised on BMC’s waste segregation data

NGOs and citizen activists have questioned the BMC’s recent data that claims it has served 16.6 lakh notices to housing societies, commercial properties and other premises for failing to segregate waste.

“It is impossible that such a large number of notices have been served, as there are many places where segregation is not carried out yet, and no notices have been served, let alone two notices. Furthermore, we have not recorded a single collection van in any of the wards,” said Priya Ubale, trustee of NGO NAGAR. The corporation, however, has stood by its official statistics. “We have copies of all the notices we have served various properties across Mumbai. We have only recently begun collection of segregated waste, so it is yet to catch on, which is likely to take time,” said Deputy Municipal Commissioner Prakash Patil, in-charge of the solid waste department.
