Prithvi Shaw A magistrate court on Wednesday directed the police to inquire into whether there are sufficient grounds to proceed on a complaint filed by a social media influencer who made allegations of her modesty being outraged by cricketer Prithvi Shaw during an argument in 2023.
The magistrate called for a report from the police under Section 202 of the Criminal Procedure Code. Under the section, the court can direct an investigation by a police officer for the purpose of deciding whether or not there is sufficient ground for proceeding on the complaint. The court directed the police to file its report by June 19. It also dismissed the woman’s plea seeking action against the police for not filing an FIR on her complaint against Shaw and others.
The woman had faced arrest in February 2023 on a complaint that she and a friend were involved in an attack on Shaw after he objected to his video being taken while he was out with his friends at a pub.
The woman had then made a counter allegation that she was molested by Shaw during the argument that ensued between them. After the police did not file an FIR on her complaint against Shaw, she through her lawyer Ali Kaashif Khan approached the magistrate court.
In June 2023, the police had said in a report that there is no evidence to show Shaw had committed the offence.
The police had then said they had recorded statements of witnesses, including staffers of the hotel where the alleged altercation took place, as well as officials of Central Industrial Security Force as the incident took place near the domestic airport. Based on their statements and CCTV footage of the hotel and near the airport, the police said the woman could be seen moving towards Shaw’s car and breaking its front windscreen. It was also submitted that the statements revealed that Shaw had not touched her inappropriately, hence there was no evidence against him.
The detailed order of the magistrate’s court order on Wednesday is yet to be made available.
