The NCP (SP) on Wednesday criticised the BJP-led Centre alleging false claims about lifting the ban on onion export.

“The government has misled us on the lifting of the ban on export of onions. No such decision has been made. This government has only one goal, that is to safeguard traders and kill farmers,” said party’s state unit chief Jayant Patil.

As per government data, a total of 4.32 lakh hectares have come under onion cultivation in the ongoing Rabi season, which will lead to a production of 86 lakh tonne onion. “Continuing with the onion export ban will further drag down onion prices and farmers will suffer losses,” said Patil.

Two days earlier, BJP leader and Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had expressed thanks to the Centre for lifting the export ban. “Heartfelt thanks to the Centre for lifting the ban on onion export! Regarding the various queries of onion growers, we have been in constant touch with Union Home Minister Amitbhai Shah, and Piyush Goyal…” Fadnavis had said.

The Centre has, however, carried on with the ban on onion export till March 31, 2024.
