Jewellery designer Queenie Singh on arm candy of a different kind She might be societys power puff girl and fashions go-to woman but these are roles that Queenie Singh has fine-tuned to perfection. She looks the part in a snappy red body-con dress that looks like its painted on her. The thin strand of diamonds snaking her wrist seems to contradict her vehement declaration that minimalist jewellery is so over and done with. Thats because Ive been trying cuff-bracelets all day,I just couldnt decide which one to wear, she chuckles. The jewelled cuffs were part of the exhibition she held on Thursday at her store Jewels by Queenie on Peddar Road. The cuffs, much like Singh herself, are intimidatingly edgy and soaked in razzmatazz. Most of them are crafted in a streamlined, modern style and encrusted with diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires. The studded clasps and hefty buckles lend a punk edge to the collection. The great thing about cuffs is they go with everything,be it ethnic or western wear, says Singh. As she shows us her favourite piece from the collection,a two-inch wide gold pillared cuff (I have a weakness for Grecian designs,),the door swings open and Malaika Arora Khan saunters into the room in a chocolate brown jumpsuit and giant gladiators. Singh switches to hostess modean act that she has down pat. Khan chooses a sturdy,gold-meshed cuff studded with emeralds. Playing hostess,we realize,is no part-time job as the designer teeters about the room in her high-heeled strut chatting with her guests that include many of societys it girls like Sridevi,Shobhaa De,Vidya Malvade,Seema Khan,Pria Kataria Puri and Bhavna Pandey while beau Farhad Taraporewala looks on adoringly. Singh is no greenhorn to cuffs. A beaten 18-carat gold, diamond encrusted cuff-bracelet was the showstopper in her couture line modelled by Sridevi at last years HDIL Couture Week. One hopes to see more in the special line of jewellery,Queenie for Giantti, that shes creating for the upcoming Lakme Fashion Week in March. Well finalise which designers to partner with,a little later, she says primly. The cuffs might be no objets dart but if one thing can be said for Singh, its that no one can accuse her of lacking imagination with Buddha figures and coiled diamond snakes encrusting the leather and gold bases. Its easy to see that Singh belongs to the clique of jewellery designers like Farah Khan and Maheep Kapoor who believe in the if you have it,flaunt it variety of fashion. Jewellery, after all,is all about creating ripples.
