No LCDs on Rajdhani Express

The proposal for installing LCDs in Rajdhani Express has been cancelled after the Western Railway realised that it is not passenger-friendly.

The proposal for installing LCDs in Rajdhani Express has been cancelled after the Western Railway realised that it is not passenger-friendly.

CP Sharma, divisional railway manager,Mumbai division,WR,said,“After analysis,it was found that this project is not passenger-friendly. So,we cancelled it. In Shatabdi, there is a sitting arrangement, but in Rajdhani there is a berth arrangement. People may not be able to watch the LCDs comfortably. It may cause inconvenience to the passengers.”

However,Ankur Shah, managing director of Time and Yoga publicity,a city-based advertising firm, which got the contract for placing LCDs in Rajdhani, feels that the project was not commercially viable for him.

“I don’t know whether the project has been cancelled. For me,it was not profitable. Rajdhani Express starts from Mumbai at 4.40 pm and we have only three-and-a-half-hours to display our programmes. We cannot generate much revenue from it. In Shatabdi,we have 12 hours of display and give Rs 10 lakh annually to WR as fee. Also,WR was demanding four times more fee for Rajdhani. This wass not affordable. Visibility in Rajdhani is also less.”

First train to have LCD TVs in India
On March 20,2007,the Mumbai- Ahmedabad long distance train Shatabdi Express became the first train in the history of the Indian Railway to have its own customised entertainment system on board so that passengers could watch a programme of their choice from a wide range of entertainment options with mandatory social service messages. The messages on maintaining cleanliness and evils of travelling without tickets will be displayed in the TVs. It was listed in Limca Book of Records for being the first train to have LCD TVs in the country. ENS
