Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has conveyed that his government would not compromise on corruption to be in power. At the end of a year in power, Fadnavis is ensuring that investigation in the multi-crore irrigation scam, one of his poll promises, is taken to its logical end.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday summoned former Water Resources Minister Sunil Tatkare for questioning on the alleged multi-crore irrigation scam. Highly placed sources revealed that former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has been called for questioning by the ACB this week.

Fadnavis directed the respective agencies to go ahead. The Chief Minister maintained that his government would not compromise on corruption or indulge in vendetta politics.

Every issue would be taken up on merit and the authority concerned would be given a free hand. If anybody is found guilty, action would be taken. Those not guilty would be absolved.

The developments were a setback for the NCP trying to refurbish its image after its debacle in the Parliament and Assembly elections in 2014.

Tatkare is state NCP president. Ajit Pawar, along with NCP president Sharad Pawar, takes decisions related to state politics.

Tatkare said, “We have always maintained we would cooperate in the investigations. I always explained my stand on the matter.”

Former Public Works Department Minister and senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal had already been called for questioning by ACB for alleged financial irregularities in the Maharashtra Sadan case. Last week, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s visit to Baramati for a function where he praised Sharad Pawar had given rise to speculation of BJP and NCP getting closer. It signalled a conflict between the BJP and Shiv Sena in Maharashtra.

Although Shiv Sena ministers have been supporting Fadnavis in running the government smoothly, the party has struck an aggressive note on the streets. Whether on issues related to its anti-Pakistan stance or rise in price of pulses, the Sena has attacked the BJP government.
