New posts created for super specialty doctors

Following the Bombay High Court’s decision to assign super specialty doctors to posts that would optimise their skills, these doctors will now hold the post of assistant professors in the main civic teaching hospitals. Around 130 posts have been created in KEM,Sion and Nair hospitals for these doctors who will be serving their one-year bond period. This has been a much welcomed move considering there are very few super specialty hospitals in the state.

“The three hospitals were in dire need of super specialty doctors. More importantly, our specialised qualifications will not get rusted,” said Dr Maqsood Khan from Sion Hospital.

In October, the Bombay High Court had ruled against the posting of super specialty doctors at primary health care centres or rural hospitals. It had also directed the state to create a nodal committee responsible for allotment of doctors serving their bond period.

In addition to the 130 posts created, around 200 doctors will be posted to the peripheral hospitals in order to boost their functioning and to reduce the load on the main civic hospitals.

“All these years, the peripheral hospitals have been outsourcing basic facilities like MRI and sonography scans due to which our monthly expenditures have been high. Hopefully now with PG doctors coming in,we will be able to cut down on the outsourcing costs,” said a BMC official.

Meanwhile, the BMC is also planning to increase the bed strength in Sion and Nair Hospitals. “ We plan to add 200 beds each to both Sion and Nair hospitals. This is a more effective and time saving way of expansion as compared to building an entirely new hospital,” the official said.
