New ICF-manufactured AC rake arrives in Mumbai, number of local train services to go up

The ICF rake will be tested for a week before being pressed into passenger service.

A new air-conditioned rake manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai was brought to the Kandivali Yard of the Indian Railways in Mumbai on Tuesday. The rake will be tested for a week before being pressed into passenger service. Officials said the new rake will help the Western Railway increase the number of AC local train services by 10-12 per day.

Additionally, a non-AC rake also arrived at the Kalwa car shed of the Central Railway a few days ago. As per sources, this rake will be used on the Uran Kharkopar line as a replacement for an old rake. Currently, five rakes are operational on this route.

After about four years, new suburban trains have arrived for both Western Railway and Central Railway.

About 31 lakh passengers in Mumbai use the suburban train services of the Western Railway on a daily basis. The corresponding figure for the Central Railway is 38 lakh.

Western Railway services

AC – 7 (12 coaches)
Non AC – 74 (12 coaches) and 14 (15 coaches)
Total trips – 1,406

Central Railway services

AC – 5 (12 coaches)
Non AC – 131 (12 coaches) and 2 (15 coaches)
Total trips – 1,810
