The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Western Railways (WR) has detected more than 6,200 cases of theft of passenger belongings (TOPB) this year from January to September, officials said.

Over 1,300 people have been arrested in connection with these cases .

In an attempt to enhance the safety of passengers, CCTV cameras and Face Recognition Systems (FRS) have been used to detect these case.

By September 2024, 528 TOPB cases and seven robbery incidents had been resolved using these technologies.

“WR RPF is committed to ensuring passengers’ safety. We are not only solving cases but also preventing them through continuous surveillance and awareness campaigns,” said Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway.

To raise awareness, WR has launched short videos showing how thefts happen during travel. These videos urge passengers to stay alert and share tips for safeguarding their belongings. A QR code allows easy access to these videos.

Several other initiatives have been put in place to combat theft. These include deploying more than 200 Maharashtra Security Force (MSF) staff on platforms, scrutinising CCTV footage for suspicious activity, and regular drives at stations to catch offenders.

Public announcements and surveillance through the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System (CCNTS) are also part of these efforts.

In terms of women’s safety, 15 “Meri Saheli” teams patrol selected trains, and 11 “E-Meri Saheli” teams operate at major stations.

RPF and GRP staff also provide night escorts for suburban trains. Furthermore, a talkback system is installed in ladies’ compartments for communication with train guards during emergencies.

These initiatives ensure passengers can easily connect with the RPF in case of theft or emergencies, making train travel safer and more secure for everyone, according to officials.
