Mumbai woke up to yet another day of smoggy skies amid deteriorating air quality as the overall air quality index (AQI) touched 182 on Thursday morning. At least eight pockets of the city reeled under the ‘poor’ air quality category as they logged an AQI of over 200.

Data furnished by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) showed that at least eight pockets of the city recorded ‘poor’ air quality while Kandivali West nearly breached the ‘poor’ category mark as the AQI there touched 200.

For perspective, AQI readings between 0-50 are regarded as good, 51-100 satisfactory, 101-200 moderate, 201-300 poor, 301-400 very poor and above 400 is considered to be severe.

The worst air quality was registered in Colaba and Malad (265), followed by Mazgaon (260), Deonar (258), Chembur (249) and Shivaji Nagar (222). At 121, the best AQI was recorded in Kandivali East with the data reflecting that none of the city’s recording stations experienced good air quality.

On Wednesday, Mumbai recorded an overall AQI of 199.

Mumbai’s worsening air quality levels have come at a time when the minimum as well as maximum temperatures have witnessed a dip this week. Since Monday, Mumbai has been waking up to below-normal temperatures with the IMD’s Santacruz observatory logging 15.5°C – which is 2.5°C below the normal – on Thursday as well.

Experts have attributed the current dip in Mumbai’s air quality to a combination of man-made factors as well as natural, meteorological factors.
