The Mumbai police on Saturday arrested two men for allegedly posing as police personnel and kidnapping an employee of a businessman before robbing him of Rs 7 lakh. The police said the complainant was carrying cash and the two accused hatched the plan to rob him after they heard that businessmen avoid approaching the authorities when their unaccounted money gets stolen.
The accused have been identified as Chunabhatti resident Raj Bhimsen Kamble, 41, and Rahul Vilas Pednekar, 40, who hails from Mankhurd.
An officer said, “The two fake policemen told Pote that they knew he was carrying unaccounted cash and that they were seizing his money and taking it to the commissioner’s office in South Mumbai.” Pote was directed to collect the money after producing the relevant documents. The complainant was then dropped outside Reay Road train station and the two men escaped.
“Although the complainant had the necessary documents, he got scared and did not object to the ‘policemen’,” said an investigator, adding, “Pote then discussed the incident with his friends after which he arrived at LT Marg police station and lodged a complaint.”
With the help of CCTV footage, the police identified the suspects and arrested them from the eastern suburbs of Mumbai. An officer said, “The two hatched the plan as Kamble owed a debt of Rs 2 lakh. They had also heard that businessmen do not report to the police when their unaccounted cash is stolen, due to which they targeted a person from Kalbadevi.”
