Light to moderate rain expected in Mumbai today; skies to remain cloudy

Mumbai woke up to showers on Friday as several pockets of the city and suburbs recorded a significant amount of rainfall between the intervening night of Thursday and Friday which continued till Friday morning. India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said the city will experience light to moderate rain in the next 24 hours and the sky will remain cloudy for the major part of the day.

At present, sporadic spells of rain continue to shower Mumbai. According to the IMD, the Santacruz observatory recorded 53 mm of rain till 8.30 am on Friday, while the coastal observatory at Colaba recorded 45 mm of rain.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) automatic weather system (AWS) showed 53 mm of rain in the island city till 8 am on Friday, followed by 26 mm in the western suburbs and 23 mm in the eastern suburbs.

The weather office has not yet issued any rain alert for Mumbai between July 14 (Friday) and July 17 (Monday), and maintained that normal rain will continue. The IMD has, however, issued a ‘yellow’ alert for several districts in Maharashtra including Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Aurangabad, Jalna, Osmanabad, Akola, Bhandara, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Nagpur, Yavatmal and Washim for the next 24 hours.
