A new petrol pump on the Western Express Highway at the southern end of the Aarey Flyover has caused several accidents since its inauguration on February 4 this year.

According to employees at the petrol pump, they witness accidents on a daily basis, as vehicles are forced to make a sharp turn after descending the flyover to approach it. The vehicles only have a small space between two dividers to cross the turn.

“Accidents usually happen during rush hours. If you are Andheri-bound, this is the only petrol pump after Borivali till the end of the Western Express Highway. There was an incident this morning involving a scooter, which skidded after a car ahead turned sharply to approach the petrol pump,” said Amit Kumar Upadhyay, an employee.

However, officials from Vanrai police station denied that accidents had been taking place here this frequently. “We found that the accidents are caused due to speeding vehicles and not because of the turn. We immediately asked the ACP and the senior inspector of the area to give me a report on the number of speed breakers and rumblers on the stretch,” said DCP (traffic) Pratap Dighavkar.
