A fire broke out at the heritage wing of the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Colaba at noon on Saturday. The hotel authorities said that the cause of the fire could be a short circuit in the basement area next to the locker rooms. Power supply to both the buildings of the hotel was turned off while the fire fighting operations were going on. Guests at the lobby were asked to wait outside and check-ins were halted till the fire was doused. The exact loss to property has not been ascertained yet. As many as eight people suffered suffocation due to the smoke of the fire and were immediately rushed to the Bombay Hospital.

Eight fire engines and four jumbo tankers were deployed to fight the fire. Three ambulances along with a rescue van and a light vehicle were also present. Fire brigade officials said that they could douse the fire by 1.30 pm. Power supply to the hotel was restored by 4.00 pm.

According to sources at the Bombay Hospital, eight people were brought into the hospital at 12:30 pm as they were suffering from lung injuries after inhaling toxic smoke. Five of them, who were suffering from moderate lung injuries, were admitted to the hospital while rest of them were released after the treatment.

“It was a grade two fire. It was caused by a short circuit in the basement of the hotel,” said Divisional Fire Officer (city) P S Rahangdale. “The basement, however, was big and was full of toxic fumes. We had to use 30 sets of breathing apparatus to fight the fire as the fumes were too toxic.

A spokesperson for Taj said,“The fire was caused by a minor short circuit. As it was in the basement area near the locker rooms,no one was hurt. However,as a precaution we asked our guests in the lobby area to wait outside and asked new guests to wait till the fire fighting operations were over. The power supply too was turned off after instructions by the fire brigade.”
