MBBS remains top choice

MBBS remains the most preferred course of selected CET students whereas dental,Ayurveda and Homeopathy courses lag in terms of popularity.

MBBS remains the most preferred course of selected CET students whereas dental,Ayurveda and Homeopathy courses lag in terms of popularity. In fact, last year, around 200 seats in dental colleges remained vacant. “These courses are less popular because there are few government colleges offering these.

For instance, there are only 3 government dental colleges offering 240 seats and 37 private dental colleges offering over 3,000 seats. But private colleges charge a high fee and hence most students don’t opt for them. Besides, students who go in for these courses do not have much scope for doing post graduate studies in them,” explained Tayde.

Apart from these, courses like the Bachelor of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology (BASLP),too, are not in demand, despite the fact that audiology and speech experts are the need of the hour in all hospitals today,Tayde said. “There are several central and state government district level speech and hearing impaired centres which do not have adequate experts specialising in these fields. Students and parents tend to clamour for MBBS but are not aware that these fields are also upcoming and in great demand.”

While recession takes it toll on all spheres, the health sector does not seem to have had any impact with respect to availability of jobs, according to Tayde.

In engineering,2,16,725 students appeared for the exam. In all there are 68,326 seats in 215 engineering colleges and 6,935 seats in 118 pharmacy colleges. Out of these there are 13 aided colleges offering 2,139 seats and 66,195 seats in 202 unaided engineering colleges in the state. In pharmacy there are nine aided colleges offering 430 seats.

Besides, there are six private engineering colleges in the state offering 2,565 seats. For more information, students can log on to http://www.dte.org. From Mumbai,56,325 students out of 2,16,725 appeared for engineering CET.  Mumbai has scored top marks in the state merit list by giving the first four state toppers in engineering.
