Marine Drive robbery case cracked

Three persons were arrested from the Wadi Bunder area on Wednesday by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad for illegal possession of firearms.

Three persons were arrested from the Wadi Bunder area on Wednesday by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) for illegal possession of firearms. On interrogation,they have allegedly divulged their roles in a robbery of Rs 45 lakh at gunpoint from employees of a bullion firm who were travelling in a taxi on Meghdoot Bridge in Marine Drive on Tuesday morning.

The arrested accused have been identified as Mohammed Qurban Raja Sheikh,22,and Syed Ali Abdul Qadar,32,and Mrityunjay Das alias Mithun,31,all residents of Wadi Bunder. They were produced before a court on Thursday,where they were remanded till October 30.

“The ATS received information about a group that was moving with weapons. Accordingly,a trap was laid in the Wadi Bunder area,and three accused were arrested,” an ATS officer said on conditions of anonymity.

The ATS has seized a 9mm pistol with three live rounds,a 0.32 revolver with two live rounds,a 8mm handgun with a single live round,as well as a toy pistol from the three accused.

“During interrogation,they have admitted to have carried out the robbery of Rs 45 lakh at Marine Drive a few days ago. We have subsequently managed to recover Rs.38.5 lakh of the loot. We are now on the lookout for the fourth accomplice involved in the robbery,” the officer said.
