Mangaonkar,Anaka for junior national squash

India’s top squash juniors Mahesh Mangaonkar of Mumbai and Anaka Alankamony of Tamil Nadu along with national coach Cyrus Poncha will be in Mumbai for the ongoing Junior & Sub Junior National Championship.

India’s top squash juniors Mahesh Mangaonkar of Mumbai and Anaka Alankamony of Tamil Nadu along with national coach Cyrus Poncha will be in Mumbai for the ongoing Junior & Sub Junior National Championship that is being held concurrently with the 69th CCI-Western India Open Squash Tournament at the CCI. Mangaonkar is the boys’ under-19 top seed,while Alankamony is the girls’ under-19 top seed.

India’s junior No. 1 Mangaonkar,who warmed up with Maharashtra State Open and Little Masters titles recently,is in top form and will be hoping to bow out of the category with a triumph before he steps into the senior ranks next season.

Tamil Nadu are set to make a clean sweep in the women’s and girls under-19 categories where the redoubtable Anaka Alankamony is the top seed in both categories and is in line for a double crown. Seeded second in both categories is her compatriot Aparajitha Balamurukan.

Alankamony will be arriving in Mumbai fresh from her maiden title triumph abroad and her second on the women’s professional tour,after winning the Ipswich Open on Sunday where she stunned top seed and world No. 39 Kylie Lindsay of New Zealand.

Eighteen-year-old Alankamony,who is on the threshold of taking over the reins from Joshna Chinappa and Dipika Pallikal,is a product of the Indian Squash Academy,Chennai.

Jaya stuns Riya

Unseeded Jaya Pandey of Maharashtra rallied to shock seeded Riya Sisodia of Rajasthan in a thrilling girls’ under-15 first qualifying round,in the Junior & Sub Junior National Squash Championship,at the Cricket Club of India on Wednesday.

Pandey ignored the early 0-2 deficit to race to an exciting 3-2 win over Sisodia,ranked in the fifth to eighth slot. In another tie,Diya Sanghi,also of Maharashtra overcame Ananya Vir of Delhi in another 3-2 thriller,after leading 2-0,with the second and deciding sets stretching into extra points.

Little Gigi Pandole of Maharashtra registered a significant win when she beat Mounisha N. of Tamil Nadu 3-2 in a nail-biting girls under-11 first qualifying round contest,after leading 2-0 and snatching the decider over extra points.

Jash Chedda of Maharashtra and Jairaj Singh of Rajasthan were significant 3-2 winners in the boys under-13 second qualifying round,while Maharashtra duo Aayush Bhansali and Aryan Hemdev and Siddharth Singhania of Delhi won deciders in the boys under-15 second qualifying round.

Aakash Jaini of MP,Naseem of Chandigarh,Harsh Jain of Haryana and Raghav Mehrotra of Maharashtra advanced to the boys under-17 third qualifying round following hard-fought wins that completed an action packed day.
