A 27-year-old drunk man allegedly molested a 23-year-old nurse in the womens compartment of a Borivali-bound local Saturday morning. The Government Railway Police (GRP) constable responsible for guarding the compartment had missed the train.
Police said the nurse boarded the 5.28-am train at Mumbai Central and was going to Matunga. She was in a deserted compartment behind the motormans cabin.
The accused,Kurla resident Devraj Kanaka, has been arrested twice by Kalyan GRP in the past one year for snatching chains.
Early Saturday,he entered the womens compartment at Mahalaxmi station and attacked the nurse. She fought back and cried for help when the train halted at Lower Parel, police said. Kanaka jumped off the train but was nabbed by a GRP constable on the platform.
Kanaka may have entered the compartment with the intention of stealing jewellery but when he saw that the nurse was not wearing a chain and was alone,he tried to force himself on her, said Rajendra Trivedi, senior inspector,Mumbai Central GRP.
Kanaka has been remanded in police custody till July 31 and has been charged with attempt to murder, molestation and assault to deter a public servant from discharge of duty under IPC.
The missing Borivali constable,Devendra Shinde, has been placed under suspension.
Shinde said he missed the train due to scheduling issues. Action will be taken against him after an inquiry, said Prabhat Kumar,Mumbai GRP Commissioner.
