Chate said Deepika had married Anil in October 2010 and after two months of their wedding,Anil wanted to buy a flat and had demanded Rs 5 lakh from Deepika’s father. When Deepika refused to get the money from her father,Anil and his family began torturing her, according to the complaint said.

In April,Deepika was beaten up by Anil and his family and was kicked out of the house. “After the incident,Anil started sending out emails to friends and family requesting them to help find missing Deepika as well as to Deepika pleading with her to come back home,” said Bhagwan.

Deepika approached the police in April but did not register a complaint and went back to her marital home. However, when the torture continued, she went to the police on May 26 and filed a FIR. Based on the complaint, the police arrested Anil under Section 498 of the IPC.
