The magisterial inquiry into the police firing that claimed the life of a youth in Jaitapur commenced on Friday. Deputy collector and sub-divisional magistrate for Dapoli Mangesh Joshi has been appointed by the government to conduct the inquiry into the firing,in which one Tabrez Sayekar was killed and seven others were injured last month.

Sayekar was reportedly part of a mob that allegedly damaged the police station in Nate village in protest against the 9,900-MW Jaitapur nuclear power project. The residents of five villages are protesting against the nuclear project on concerns about livelihood, health and radiation.

The protest took a violent turn on April 18,when villagers stalled the work at the site besides allegedly attacked the police station. The police had opened fire on the mob. The government had ordered a magisterial inquiry into the firing following protests from the Opposition parties.

Joshi interacted with the residents of Madban and Sakhri Nate on Friday afternoon. The local people said Joshi had explained the process of inquiry to them and that he would begin recording statements from Saturday.

“There was a discussion with the villagers regarding the inquiry. The official recording of statements will begin tomorrow. We have told him about our expectations,” Amjad Borkar of Sakhri Nate said.
