The Mumbai Traffic Police have written to the BMC suggesting them ways of easing congestion on the Hindmata, the main arterial road connecting the north-south-east corridor.
The traffic police have suggested to the civic body to join the two flyovers which are constructed over the Hindmata junction in Dadar east.
“The junction remains flooded every monsoon as it is a low-lying area and maximum number of vehicles pass through the junction” said Qaiser Khalid, ACP(traffic).
More than one lakh vehicles pass through the Dadar junction daily and, with the flooding, go through almost two hours of traffic jam to cross the two junctions. “The Babasaheb Ambedkar Road is the most affected during monsoon as the junction connects south, central, east and west corridors of Mumbai,” said an official.
“The commuters who travel from central to south Mumbai have to navigate the traffic which passes through the junction which connects Dadar west and east. If the flyovers are connected the commuters traveling to south Mumbai can avoid the junction,” said Khalid.
Khalid added that they have suggested to the BMC that the flyover could have an exit at Dadar TT for traffic going towards Dadar (east) and Shindewadi.
The traffic police said that Dadar (east) is mostly a residential area and has shops.
“The junction could be traffic jam free if the two flyovers are connected,” added Khalid.
Meanwhile the BMC said it has still to receive the traffic police’s proposal.
“So far we have not received the plan but our own mobility plan study as carried out by the civic traffic department is underway. Our study will look into these aspects and scientifically see what are the possible solutions for this junction since flyover construction will involve engineering which cannot only rely on hunches,”said additional municipal commissioner SVR Srinivas, in-charge of the civic roads, traffic and bridges department.
