Animal transporters call off strike

ANIMAL transporters to the Deonar slaughterhouse have called off their proposed strike after assurances from police that they will not be harassed if they abide by law. The transporters had threatened to go on strike after animal activists and police raided this week three trucks allegedly carrying cattle to slaughter. Cow slaughter is prohibited in Maharashtra. However,on Sunday, they were assured by Thane Rural Superintendent of Police Ravindra Sengaonkar that they will not be harassed if they abide by law. “I have assured them that if they follow the guidelines laid down for transport of animals, have all their permits in place and abide by the law, they will not be harassed. However,I made it clear that no cow or calf be transported,to which they agreed,” he added.
