Customs official held on graft charge
The Central Bureau of Investigation on Sunday arrested an assistant commissioner of Customs (cargo) for allegedly accepting bribe to clear consignments of importers. Following a tip off on April 30,the CBI had deployed its officers at the airports cargo complex and found an employee of the Customs House Agents (CHA) dealing on behalf of Assistant Commissioner,import (shed),Vikas Jhajharia.
He was collecting money,a reward for clearing goods for various importers,for Jhajharia. He was apprehended along with cash to the tune of Rs 1,37,500, a CBI release said. The agent,according to the CBI,handed over Rs 58,000 to Jhajharia on April 30. Following this,the agency registered a case against Jhajaria and seized Rs 58,000,an envelope and a polythene bag in which the cash was delivered.
22-year-old dies in car mishap
A 22-year-old automobile engineer died early on Monday after he lost control of the car he was driving and crashed it into a pole in Jogeshwari. Four others in the car sustained injuries and were admitted to Cooper Hospital. According to the police,the incident occurred around 5 am in Chacha Nagar on the Western Express Highway in Jogeshwari (East). The police said Gururaj Maikar,an automobile engineer with Mahindra and Mahindra Company,along with his younger brother Yash (13),and his three friends Rishabh Shah (15),Chaitanya Gawde (17) and Gerwin Rodriguez (15),went for a ride in a Chevrolet car. The car belonged to Rishabhs father,a Borivali-based builder. They left from Borivali around 1 am and drove to south Mumbai. On their way back,Gururaj,who was speeding the car on empty road,lost control and hit a divider before crashing into a pole. While Gururaj died on the spot,four others were discharged after treatment.
Hookah parlours: Top cop appears in HC
Commissioner of Police Arup Patnaik appeared in the Bombay High Court on Monday after being summoned in a PIL filed by Crusade Against Tobacco,an NGO,against mushrooming hookah parlours in the city. Chief Justice Mohit Shah told Patnaik,The petitioner has told the court the police are hesitating to register FIR against illegal hookah parlours. We would like to know what action you propose against such parlours. Patnaik said,I have just received the papers. I will record statement of the petitioner and file a reply by Thursday on what action can be or has been taken. The court adjourned the case till May 5.
