Humidity around 70%,min temp up

Even though maximum temperatures have been hovering around normal in the past few days,it is an increase in the minimum temperatures that has led to a feeling of discomfort in the city.

Due to high humidity, maximum temperatures in the city in May have been moderate. Temperatures in Colaba and Santacruz remained around 33 and 340C. However, minimum temperatures in the suburbs — which were around 250C in the middle of the month — have on Tuesday risen to 27.80C .

In the island city, night temperatures that have been high all month crossed 280C for the first time last week and recorded 28.10C on Tuesday. Thus, the difference between the maximum and minimum temperatures in the city over the last few days has been only around six to seven degrees.

Met department attributed the increase in minimum temperatures to humidity brought by westerly winds. “At present, the westerly winds are blowing over the city bringing moisture from the Arabian Sea leading to high humidity levels and clouding. Humidity levels have been around 70 per cent lately,” said V K Rajeev, director, weather forecast,India Meteorological Department (IMD). “In the past few days, the sky has been cloudy even at night. Thus, the outgoing radiation is trapped leading to a rise in minimum temperatures. The feeling of discomfort is mainly due to the humidity,” Rajeev said.

Weathermen do not expect a significant change in weather conditions in the next few days. The sky will be partly cloudy with maximum and minimum temperatures around 34 and 280C in the next two days, stated the IMD website.
