Hospitals go into overdrive

Since 5.45 am,when the 33-year old Babu Genu building collapsed,41 residents were rescued and sent to JJ Group of Hospitals.

Since 5.45 am,when the 33-year old Babu Genu building collapsed,41 residents were rescued and sent to JJ Group of Hospitals. Ambulances from Nair,KEM and J J Hospitals were stationed throughout the day at the spot to attend critically injured victims.

Of the 14 dead,twelve bodies were brought to state-run JJ Group of Hospitals and one was sent to civic-run Nair Hospital,said rescue officials. Five bodies remain unidentified,said doctors.

A 60-year-old woman was brought dead to Nair Hospital. She was yet to be identified,said dean Dr R N Bharmal. Bharmal said another injured,Shweta Kamble,19,was brought to the hospital with minor abrasions later in the evening. Of the 29 admitted in the state-run JJ hospital,three are in critical condition. The others suffered fractures and minor injuries. “The people who were brought early have less suffocation problems,however the ones admitted later have severe suffocation issues,” said Dr T P Lahane,Dean,JJ Group of Hospitals.

Of the three critically injured,52-year-old Vijay Sakharam Kamble sustained blunt trauma injuries with severe suffocation problems,while another patient — 32-year-old Pooja Amol —Patankar suffered hip-dislocation,said JJ hospital authorities. Chetna Zagde,20,sustained laceration(jagged wound) and contusion in chin,they said.

Sanjay Waghmare, 47,among the first to be taken to state-run J J Hospital,was among the lucky survivors. His wife,Rajshree Waghmare(37) and his daughter,Harshada Waghmare(17),both escaped with minor injuries and are recuperating in hospital.
