A vacation bench of the Bombay High Court on Friday has asked the state government and the Mumbai University to file an affidavit stating the steps taken by them against teachers from various universities who had called an indefinite strike. The court has also asked the government to state the measures taken to evaluate answer sheets of about 13 lakh graduate and post-graduate students that remained uncorrected owing to the strike.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) had moved seeking action against the college and university teachers on strike. ABVP’s lawyer Uday Warunjikar told the court that it is the responsibility of the respondents to declare the results in 45 days and the state government must declare their strike illegal.

The MFUCTO,however, contended that the government has not heard their demands and they were compelled to go on strike. The Northern Maharashtra University, however, informed the court that 79 teachers had joined in the assessment of answer sheets and about 100 were likely to join on Friday. The court asked the other universities and the government to file their affidavit by May 25.
