When the celebrated director Danny Boyle returned to the stage after nearly 15 years,it was only expected that theatre lovers from across the world would want to see his work. His theatre comeback created even more excitement since it happened to be an adaptation of Mary Shelleys Frankenstein. The classic Gothic novel was adapted for the stage by Nick Dear and released by Boyle for Londons National Theatre.
Though the final performance of Frankenstein was on May 2 in London,theatre-lovers can see it at Mumbais National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA) next week. The play will be screened on June 15 at the NCPAs Dance Theatre Godrej as a special invitees show, followed by public screenings from June 17-19. This is a part of the National Theatre Live initiative which broadcasts its productions to audiences in cinemas and theatres in different parts of the world to give them a chance to watch their work.
Apart from Boyles direction which received a thumbs up from the UK critics, what makes the play even more of a treat is the presence of actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller, who alternate the roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature. The NCPA will be showing both the combinations. It may not match the visual experience of watching the theatrical production, but its the next best thing, said Deepa Gahlot, head of programming (theatre and film),NCPA.
In collaboration with the National Theatre, the NCPA plans to screen more of the London theatres productions in future. Coming up next is Anton Chekhovs The Cherry Orchard, which is directed by Howard Davies, says Gahlot, adding that they are yet to decide the date.
