The dry spell that the city witnessed over the past week is likely to continue with little or no showers expected over the next two-three days, officials from the weather department said.

“Monsoon is not a continuous phase. It occurs in stages; first active and then weak. It is weak right now since no weather system is bringing rain to the city,” said VK Rajeev,Director,India Meteorological Department (IMD). He added that after a few days,a wet spell of five to six days is likely to hit the city.

Temperatures rose by 1°C this week compared to last. The maximum temperature hovered around 32 °C while the minimum was around 28°C. Fortunately for Mumbaikars, the humidity levels have been lower than last week.“Weather systems that bring rain to Mumbai are an offshore trough along the coast,a low pressure area near the city or an upper air cyclonic circulation. None of these factors exist as of now. There could be a continuous spell after the next two or three days depending upon the intensity and the circulation of the system,” Rajeev said.

Since the onset of monsoon till June 24,the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s automatic weather systems have recorded 451.6 mm rain in the island city area,560.9 mm in the eastern suburbs and 547.20 mm in the western suburbs. The city has received 21.4% of its annual average rainfall so far.
