A crane driver was killed after he fell off the crane while operating it to lift bogies of an engine at electric locomotive shed,Kalyan,on Friday. The deceased is RB Dhande,50.

Employees at the shed, where locomotives are maintained and repaired, alleged that the administration often overlooked safety measures. “There is a shortage of workers. We often have to work overtime but are not paid accordingly. Also, the cranes are old and handling them is risky,” said a worker.

Sources said DP Tripathi,an employee at Parel Workshop, had died in a similar mishap two months ago. In January last year,Anand Gonde,a helper, died after he was crushed between buffers of two railway engines at CST electric locomotive shed.

S Mudgerikar, chief PRO,Central Railway (CR),said,“Railway jobs are stressful. Workshops and health check-ups are conducted regularly. The CR welfare team visited Dhande’s residence and Rs 15,000 has been to his family as ex-gratia and another Rs 15,000 as funeral advance.”
