Katrina Kaifs success story is about hard work and a heavy dose of luck. Criticised for her acting skills, diction and language at the beginning of her career,Kaif is today in an enviable position, having signed three movies with Yashraj Films. If rumours are to be believed, she might even grab that coveted role opposite Aamir Khan in Dhoom 3. She tells Priyanka Pereira about her journey to the top and her much talked about on-screen pairing with Salman Khan
After a rather unconventional role in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaara, will Mere Brother Ki Dulhan (MBKD) take you a notch higher?
It was a very risky role because the character Dimple is not the traditional Bollywood heroine. We had this joke where people told me,that after watching this film my fans are going to send me Get well soon cardsthey are either going to think I am crazy or simply love the character.
People are already talking about your grunge look in the song Dhunki.
All the college kids are loving it. They love dressing up that way and it is an easy look to achieve.
Your Hindi seems to have improved. Are you still continuing with your training?
Of course,I am. I still practise Hindi. I have tutors on every film to help me with the diction and language.
Imran Khan said in an earlier interview that MBKD will silence those who doubt your acting abilities. You think so?
Imran meant it in a nice way but I told him I did not think anyone doubted my acting credentials (laughs). Then,Imran became silent.
With filmmakers casting you in prominent roles,do you feel more accomplished as an actor now?
I feel blessed that most of my films have done well right from the beginning of my career. Having said that,I must add that my Hindi was weaker in the beginning and the scenes I was doing were geared towards lighter comedy. As time passed,my Hindi improved and roles became more prominent. Today,Yash Chopra has decided that he is going to cast me in a film opposite Shah Rukh Khan.
What was your first reaction when you were offered this role opposite Shah Rukh Khan?
I was very happy. Who wouldnt want to work with Shah Rukh Khan? He is one of the legends of the Hindi film industry.
You have done a dance number with Salman Khan in Bodyguard and you are also working with him in Ek Tha Tiger. Has the equations changed after your break-up?
Of course, equations have changed between then and now. But as co-stars and friends,it is nice if we can work together and I am glad we are doing this film. As for the dance number in Bodyguard,it was Alvira Khan who asked me to do it and I said yes.
Were you skeptical about taking up the offer with Salman as there would be too much speculation around it?
Not really. I dont pay too much attention to these things these days. And anyway,if I stop working with a list of people, soon I will be working with nobody.
What do three YRF films mean to you?
That to me is a pure coincidence. For me,they are just films with good scripts. So there is no thought or plan or anything like that.
You have often been considered a lucky charm in your films. Does luck explain your dream run in Bollywood?
I dont think luck can explain anything in this world, but my destiny can. I can see Gods hand that has helped me succeed in everything I have done.
