Designs on India

Angelina Jolie is an ardent fan of her creations. The Hollywood star even wore one at the Cannes festival in 2008 when she announced that she was pregnant with partner Brad Pitt’s twins. Beyonce,Fergie,Halle Berry and Eva Longoria Parker are also part of her celeb clientele. But for American designer Nicole Miller, dressing up the celebs is just one part of her job profile.

As an alumnus of the famous Rhode Island School of Design and the Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne,Nicole has come a long way since her first store at Madison Avenue in the US in 1986. Today, she has extended her presence to the UK,Ireland,Japan and the Middle East. And with her recent trunk show in Mumbai,it’s clear that India is also figuring on her radar now.

“Given our strategy of international expansion,India was an obvious choice,” says Miller. On Friday, she launched her Holiday/Resort 2012 collection in Mumbai. Talking about the collection, she says,“This is a glamorous collection with an emphasis on shine and texture. I have experimented with a ‘foiling’ technique, which is a heat transfer process where the foil is literally applied on the fabric.”

She draws inspiration from a wide range of influences including cinema, contemporary art and her regular travels. Miller, however,is yet to visit India. “I am dying to explore India — I have heard so much about it. But I am already inspired by this beautiful country; I use embellishments from India all the time in my luxury evening collections,” she says.

Among the Indian designers, she is familiar with the work of Manish Arora. “I would love to collaborate with him at some point. Apart from him,I have even heard of Bollywood; I believe it churns out more movies than Hollywood. I would love to dress Bollywood actors Sonam Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan. And Frieda Pinto. She looks gorgeous,” says the designer.
