Couture for a cause

Aki Narula designs limited edition scarves for an HIV/AIDS intitiative for Africa.

It has been a while since Aki Narula last designed a collection. So if you are wondering where he’s disappeared off to,here’s some news. The designer and stylist is launching a limited edition of red scarves as part of an initiative to raise proceeds for Global FundTM,a financer of programmes to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Speaking about it,he says,“When Belvedere approached me to design these limited edition scarves,I was more than happy to do my bit. There are a total of 350 scarves and no two pieces are like each other, save for the fact that they are all made of organic red chiffon and have been all hand-drawn by me.”

R&B king Usher was signed on as the face of Belvedere’s social-cause campaign. Narula will be the India face of this campaign. “The scarves will be on display at the by-invitation consumer launch that will take place both in Mumbai and New Delhi this November. The line will also be retailed at select design stores beginning early 2012,” he points out, adding,a line of special edition T-shirts may be launched and the sale proceeds would again go to the Global Fund.

Ask him about the thought behind each scarf and he replies,“I just went with the flow; so you will find motifs such as hearts, keys, envelopes, flowers, trees—the kind of things one would scribble or doodle on one’s notepad.”

Apart from this,Narula—who even retailed his collection at Cannes and St Tropez in 2003—is also busy with several Bollywood projects. “I am styling for Barfee and Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl. Next year,I plan to work on a new collection.”
