The Mumbai Police have initiated the process of issuing notices to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers, warning them of strict action in case their protest against toll collection on Wednesday leads to law and order problems.
The MNS has for the past month been targeting toll booths across the state. MNS chief Raj Thackeray had on Sunday called for a state-wide agitation against toll booths.
The police on Monday started issuing notices under Section 149 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) to MNS workers with a history of ‘trouble-making’ during agitations. Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Sadanand Date said, “We are also undertaking ample precautionary and deployment measures.”
Dhananjay Kulkarni, DCP (Zone V) said a similar notice will be served on Thackeray on Tuesday.
The notices warn party members not to indulge in activities that might lead to casualties, damage to property or other law and order problems in the city. In case such incidents do happen, the party members will be held responsible and legal action will be taken against them.
Senior officers are currently finalising details of deployment, including whether or not to request additional manpower from paramilitary forces like the State Reserve Police Force.
