The city police’s Crime Branch, which is probing the 2013 Lohariya murder, is looking for a driver employed by Anurag Garg, the alleged main conspirator.
The driver, who allegedly delivered the supari amount from Garg to arrested accused Emmanuel Amolik, has been missing since the day of the crime, sources said on Monday.
Lohariya, a builder, was shot outside his Vashi office allegedly by Venkatesh Shettiar and Wajid Qureshi on February 16 last year in a hit managed by former police inspector Amolik. Garg, who was among the five people named by Lohariya before he died, is alleged to have given the contract to Amolik. Garg surrendered to the police on May 9 this year, and had been in police custody since then.
On Monday, he was produced in a Thane metropolitan court, where the Crime Branch sought an extension of his custody to question him further on the whereabouts of his driver Prashant Kamble.
However, the court remanded Garg to judicial custody till June 2.
“The driver has been missing since the day of murder. He was the one who took the money from Garg and delivered it to Amolik,” said advocate Mayura Maru, the lawyer for Lohariya’s son Sandeep.
“Kamble’s questioning is significant as it further helps us establish a link between between Garg and his friends in the real estate industry and Amolik and his accomplices. We haven’t yet named him as an accused in the case. At best, he could make a good witness,” said an officer.
It was also argued in court on Monday that the possibility of Kamble having been killed off by Garg and his accomplices could not be denied and that his custody was necessary to verify this. However, the court still sent him to judicial custody.
