The Colaba police Tuesday registered an FIR against an unidentified man who had allegedly made vulgar gestures at a foreign national in Colaba Monday morning. The woman had clicked a picture of the accused and posted it on Twitter, after which it went viral, attracting the attention of the authorities.
According to the Colaba police, the FIR was registered Tuesday afternoon after the woman, an American writer currently based in Mumbai, recorded her statement with the police.
“We had spoken to the victim late Monday night and had asked her to record her statement so that we could register a case against the accused. On Tuesday, we sent a team to her residence to record her statement, after which we registered an FIR for outraging a woman’s modesty under section 509 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC),” said Senior Police Inspector Vinay Gadgil, Colaba police station.
According to the woman’s statement, she was passing by Henry Road in Colaba when the young man made lewd gestures at her. She took his picture and a couple of taxi drivers tried to catch him but he managed to flee, after which she posted the picture on Twitter.
The tweet went viral within a couple of hours, and the police, too, took note of it. Many Twitter users suggested that the woman approach the police.
On Tuesday, the woman tweeted, “I am now in touch with the police and am handing this matter over to them. I wanted to say thank you for the overwhelming support I have received from so many people across India about this incident.”
“We are now making inquiries in the area where the incident occurred, trying to identify the accused. We are also checking for any CCTVs in the area which might have captured the incident, or the path that the accused took when he fled, which might give us some clue,” Gadgil added.
The victim’s tweet was picked by the CMO’s official Twitter handle with the CM directing the Mumbai Police to act on the complaint.
