To ensure smooth take-off for the ambitious revamp of the largest slum in Asia,Dharavi Redevelopment Authority (DRA) wants a consultant appointed to provide the state government with all possible options to choose the ideal agency to implement the Rs 10,000-crore scheme.“The consultant will undertake studies to determine whether redevelopment through societies or a government agency is a more feasible,” a senior civic official said.

The consultant will also assist in feasibility studies and selection of developers through bidding.

“Crucial issues such as needs of the population involved in revamp, its density, open space requirement and road construction will be assessed by the consultant,” the official said.

In a recent tender notice put up by Slum Rehabilitation Authority, consultants of international experience were invited. These firms should also have similar experience in India to be able to apply, the notice said. The services of the consultant will include a review of existing data, reports and documents of earlier bids for sectors 1 to 4 available with DRP.

Earlier this year, the state government said it planned to

invite consultants to ensure seamless integration of amenities. It set a deadline of August for inviting bids for various phases of the Dharavi revamp scheme mooted nearly a decade ago.

The government plans to start the project early next year. Dharavi comprises five sectors spread across 240 hectares. But the project involves only 152 hectares and excludes railway land,a Tata Power receiving station and recently executed development.
