Over 2,000 conservancy workers protested outside the BMC head office at CST on Tuesday demanding dues pending for two years. The temporary contract workers of the BMCs solid waste management department claimed that though they are entitled to 21 paid leaves per year, they have not been paid for the same since 2008.
There are about 6000 conservancy workers in the city including sweepers and waste-pickers. They earn Rs 180 per day as minimum wages and claim they have not got money for 42 paid leaves in the last two years. They also said that some workers had failed to receive their minimum wages too.
AY Gaikwad, president of the Kachra Vahtuk Shramik Sangh, said that inspite of repeated pleas to local ward offices, the BMC had not paid the workers. They are yet to receive their dues. If our appeal is not heard then we will go on strike in the future, said Gaikwad.
Additional municipal commissioner AK Singh said that the BMC will ensure that minimum wages are paid to all its workers. These are contract workers but since BMC is the principal employer,we will make sure that they get their dues. I have also suggested that a separate bank account be opened for each worker so that wages can be directly be credited to their account, said Singh.
