The Chief Justice of India, D Y Chandrachud, will lay the foundation stone of the Bombay High Court’s new building complex in Bandra (East) on Monday evening.

As per a release by the HC administration, possession of 30.16 acres of land will be handed over to the High Court in a phased manner, of which, the first tranche measuring 4.39 acres has already been handed over, as per assurance given to the Supreme Court.

The Indian Express on October 24, 2022, had first reported that the state government was planning to allot 30-acre land in Bandra (East) Government Colony for the new HC complex.

CM Shinde, Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, and judges of the Supreme Court, including Justices Bhushan R Gavai, Abhay S Oka, Dipankar Datta, Ujjal Bhuyan, Prasanna B Varale, who previously worked at the Bombay High Court, will also be present for the event presided over by the present Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya.

As per the release, the HC complex will have world-class infrastructure, well-designed and spacious courtrooms, chambers for judges and registry personnel, an arbitration and mediation centre, an auditorium, library, as well as a host of features and amenities for staff, lawyers and litigants.

“The plan is to enable stakeholders to have access to support services such as banking and telecom, medical facilities, digitisation centre, creche, cafeteria, waiting areas, multi-storey car park, museum and lawyers’ chambers, with the design keeping in mind accessibility for differently-abled stakeholders,” the release added.

The state Public Works Department (PWD) had told the Bombay High Court that 8.5 hectares (21.004 acre) of land would be allotted for the judicial complex and residences of judges, with 3.63 hectares (8.969 acre) for commercial development for the central tribunal and lawyers’ chambers; and the government would receive revenue from the same.

Justice Abhay S Oka (currently Supreme Court judge) in January 2019 had directed the government to take a decision on offering a large and convenient plot of land for the new HC complex.
