City likely to get rain today: Met

Although the south-west monsoon began its retreat on September 24,showers are likely in the city on Saturday due to the formation of a new weather system.

Although the south-west monsoon began its retreat on September 24,showers are likely in the city on Saturday due to the formation of a new weather system.

The monsoon began its retreat three weeks after normal, but has not withdrawn from Maharashtra yet. Weathermen estimated the monsoon to withdraw from the city in the first week of October.

A new weather system has formed over the Arabian Sea and may bring some rain to the city. “There is an upper air cyclonic circulation over east central Arabian Sea off south Maharashtra coast. Under the influence of this, there will be southerly or south westerly currents which will bring rain in the city. Parts of Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra have received some rain,” said S Sudevan,Director,India Meteorological Department (IMD).

However, weathermen still expect the retreat from the city in the first week of October. “There need not be much effect of this upper air cyclonic circulation as it may not last long. Thus,as of now,we maintain our forecast for withdrawal,” said NY Apte,Deputy Director General of Meteorology,IMD. The city remained dry on Friday with Santacruz and Colaba weather stations both recording no rain between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm.
