Many times, restaurants promise one thing as part of their promotions but it turns out to be something else. Some take it with a shrug, others rant about it. Most move on. But when a place turns out to be what it actually promised you in a remote advertisement or a press release, the pleasure is manifold. Thats what unfolds at the recently open Uber Lounge.
The entrance is the usual ubiquitous facade one sees at restaurants across the city. We decide to forgo dining at the cafe section, and decide to patronise the lounge section in the basement. We are guided to our table and settle down. Oops,I mean settle, for there are no chairs. There are two large divans perpendicular to each other where one can literally lie back and lounge. We sink back into one of the divans and start browsing through the menu. The music is tres chic and at exactly the right volume loud enough to be discernible but not so loud as to disturb conversations.
The menu is multi-cuisine,limited in selection but replete with spelling mistakes (including in the bar menu). After an amusing perusal,we start with the Rosemary Chicken Malai Tikka Satay, which turned out to be rather disappointing,as it is basically a skewered malai tikka accompanied by a tamarind-based dip. However,by now,the seating and the music have lulled us into an amiable mood, and we move on with no hard feelings.
Next up is a Red Thai Curry Chicken Pasta, which we order just because it sounds so wrong. What came resembles nothing more than a penne arrabiata. In vain,we attempt to find some Thai flavours, but there is no galangal,no coconut milk nothing.
Finally,we are served the main course, which more than makes up for the disappointment of the former courses. The Gol Boti Angara is great, the mutton well-cooked and the gravy has a smoky flavour. The Nimu Wali Dal is good, although the generous addition of ghee overpowers the lime in the dish. The dessert selection is much the same that you get in any relatively upscale restaurant.
When we see the modest bill,we understand why the pasta so resembled arrabiata, precisely because it was an arrabiata. Clearly a miscommunication between the service and kitchen staffs as our server definitely said: Thai Red Curry Pasta.
