Chavan, Vikhe-Patil, Kadam lose, Rane wins co-op bank polls

Chavan’s panel won only five seats on the board of directors.

 Co-operative Bank elections In the Pune District Co-operative Bank elections, NCP leader Ajit Pawar’s panel bagged 17 seats and the rivals got 4.

Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Ashok Chavan and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil were defeated in the elections to the district cooperative banks. Chavan was defeated in Nanded and Vikhe-Patil in Ahmednagar district cooperative bank elections. The results were announced on Thursday.

Chavan-led Kisan Samruddhi lost to Shetkari Vikas, an alliance of NCP, Shiv Sena and BJP. Chavan’s panel won only five seats on the board of directors compared to Shetkari Vikas that won 16 out of a total 21 seats.

In Ahmednagar, traditional rivals Vikhe-Patil and former minister Balasaheb Thorat were pitted against each other. Vikhe-Patil lost to Thorat’s panel that won 11 posts against Vikhe-Patil’s ten. Former senior Congress minister Patangrao Kadam, a political heavyweight in western Maharashtra failed to have the upper hand in Sangli. Kadam’s Rayat panel won only six seats and lost to NCP led alliance (Sena-BJP) in Sangli which won 13 seats in the board.

Senior Congress leader Narayan Rane, who was defeated in the Bandra (East) by-polls, won the Sindhudurg district cooperative bank elections. Coming close on the heels of the Bandra(East) assembly by-poll defeat, the district cooperative bank elections provided a much-needed relief to the Congress leader.

In the Pune District Co-operative Bank elections, NCP leader Ajit Pawar’s panel bagged 17 seats and the rivals got 4.

In North Maharashtra, agriculture minister Eknath Khadse won the Jalgaon district cooperative bank polls getting 17 votes against, rivals’ four. The score was the same, 17-4 in Latur where Amit Deshmukh’s panel won.

In the fiercely fought elections for control over the Mumbai District Co-operative Bank, BJP panel led by Pravin Darekar defeated the Shiv Sena panel led by Sunil Raut, the brother of Sanjay Raut (MP and editor of Saamna). Darekar who joined the BJP recently won despite charges of corruption in the district co-op bank against him.
