A driver of a state-run Shivneri bus was killed in an accident on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway late on Sunday. Police said Ajit Wadkar (29),who was overspeeding,had rammed into a tempo truck from behind near the Panvel stretch.
Officers of New Panvel police station said they received a call at 10.35 pm informing them of the incident. Both vehicles were headed towards Mumbai from Pune when the accident took place.
The accident resulted in a major traffic snarl on the expressway,which continued till the early hours of Monday.
We were told that an accident had taken place near the Panvel stretch and that the driver of the bus was injured. A team was rushed to the spot and we took Wadkar to a hospital where he was declared dead on arrival, said an officer.
The officer said no other bus passengers suffered major injuries in the accident. Passengers escaped with minor abrasions and were allowed to go after first-aid.
Passengers said the bus was overspeeding and rammed into the tempo from behind. The impact of the collission was such that Wadkar was thrown off and the front portion of the bus was damaged, the officer said.
Police did not register any offence against the tempo truck driver and let him go after investigations revealed that he was not at fault.
