Still ill-treated in jail: Jerome
Naval officer Emile Jerome Mathew,accused in the Neeraj Grover murder,on Friday moved an application before the sessions court claiming that he continues to be ill treatment by jail officials. Jerome,who allegedly had roughed up two policemen last week,said he was being wrongly implicated. The court directed jail authorities to ensure no one misbehaves with Jerome and that he is provided complete security.
Marathi signs: BMC slows down
A fortnight after telling shops and establishments to ensure within 60 days that Marathi is the boldest type on the signboards bearing their names,the BMC withdrew the order on Friday,admitting that it had misread the High Court’s ruling. The HC had,in 2001,stayed the rule on a large Marathi font on signs,prohibiting fines on violators. However,after the court disposed of another case,the BMC misread the ruling and issued a 60-day ultimatum.
Omani moves HC against jail term
Al Hadi Badar Naseer Mohammed,30,of Oman,sentenced to five years in jail for carrying Diwali firecrackers on an aircraft,has moved the Bombay High Court after serving 16 months. The Consulate of Oman and medical certificates have declared him mentally unsound.
Bail for Thane builder
The Bombay High Court on Friday granted bail against Rs 50,000 to builder Rashmikant Shah,arrested for cheating at the airport in May 2009. Justice V M Kanade directed him to furnish two sureties of the like amount within a week.
