A total of 13 teams will be seen in action during the Bombay Gymkhana-Womens Football League (WFL) which is scheduled to commence at the lush green,Bombay Gymkhana grounds from May 17 to June 2.
After a gap of almost three years,women football players from the city,will once again get an opportunity to let their hair down and literally,have a ball.
With support from Bombay Gymkhana,who have extended all cooperation,the Mumbai District Football Association (MDFA),has managed to revive their women league this season.
According to MDFA secretary,Souter Vaz,the tournament was last played in 2007-08 with Fr. Agnel Gymkhana emerging champions and Sea View the runners-up.
The clubs have been divided into two pools (one pool consists of seven teams and the other six teams) and the top two teams from each pool will qualify for the semi-finals to be played on May 31.
The grand finale will be played on June 2.
Bombay Gym in the fray
Hosts Bombay Gymkhana for the first time in its long and rich sporting history has formed a womens football team and they will also be vying for top honours in this competition.
The Bombay Gym team is being captained by Kunashni Parikh,a former vice-captain of the Indian national under-16 team.
The Bombay Gym has a rich football culture. The Senior team plays in the MDFA Super Division while the Bombay Gym Colts U-18 team played in the 3rd Division but should be promoted this year to the 2nd Division.
Rahul Raichand the Bombay Gym football secretary stated that We at Bombay Gym have been planning to launch a ladies team for a very long time and have finally got our act together.
Our team is very young and enthusiastic. We are very confident that this team will go from strength to strength and in a couple of years be amongst the best teams in the city, he added.
