BMC returns cheque to Shiv Sena

Thackeray funeral expense.

BMC has returned a cheque for Rs 5 lakh Shiv Sena had issued it for using public money for the funeral of party chief Bal Thackeray.

“The government had decided to give Thackeray a state funeral,” said municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte.

“We spent money as per this decision and after discussions with Mumbai Police. As such,we have returned the cheque to Uddhav Thackeray.”

About a fortnight ago,the G-North ward officer had sought post-facto approval of the standing committee for public funds used to install CCTV cameras,LED screens and make other arrangements for the funeral.

Mayor Sunil Prabhu justified the spend,saying the government had decided to cremate Thackeray with full state honours.

A few days later,Thackeray handed over a cheque to BMC saying the party did not want to use public funds.
