Realignment of Barfiwala flyover with Gokhale bridge to be completed by June 30: BMC
The work to merge the two structures commenced in April, two months after the inauguration of the Gokhale bridge for vehicular traffic.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced Monday that the realignment work of the CD Barfiwala Flyover with the newly constructed Gopal Krishna Gokhale Bridge will be completed by June 30.
The work to merge the two structures commenced in April, two months after the inauguration of the Gokhale bridge for vehicular traffic.
The Barfiwala Flyover, built in 2008, originates from Juhu and connects with the north-south arms of the old Gokhale Bridge, which has stood since 1960.
The latter was demolished in 2022 and replaced by a new bridge, which was opened for vehicular traffic on February 26 this year.
However, due to railway regulations mandating an elevated height for bridges spanning over tracks, the BMC elevated the new Gokhale Bridge by six meters, causing misalignment with the Barfiwala Flyover.
Civic officials noted that the realignment process is underway, with the BMC having completed testing of new bearings, now transported to the site.
These bearings will facilitate raising the height of the Barfiwala flyover pillars to align with the Gokhale Bridge.
In an earlier report submitted to BMC by the Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI), it was recommended that since the Barfiwala Flyover is in good condition, complete demolition is unnecessary. Subsequently, civic authorities sought a second technical opinion from IIT-Bombay, which also supported VJTI’s assessment.
The estimated cost for aligning the two structures is approximately Rs 8 crore.
