BMC ends contract with coaching class for jr colleges

No result: Move comes as civic students fail to make it to IIT courses

Despite BMC’s efforts to bring civic school children into the mainstream through its pilot junior colleges being run in partnership with private coaching institutions, not a single student has secured admission to IIT-based programmes. With no results,BMC has terminated its contract with coaching institute IIT-ian’s Pace at its Bhavani Shankar Junior College of Science in Dadar. It has chosen a rival coaching class,Vidyalankar Institute of Technology,to run the college on a trial basis.

In 2009,BMC joined hands with two coaching classes run bu IIT alumni — IIT-ian’s Pace and Yukti — to institionalise three junior colleges on a public-private-partnership basis. Yukti was running Dixit Road Junior College of Science,Vile Parle, while IITians Pace took charge of Bhavani Shankar Junior College of Science,Dadar and Ratanbai Walbai Junior Science College,Mulund.

BMC provided space to run these colleges, with seat capacity of 100 each and 50 per cent reservation for civic students. The costs for schooling for IIT-JEE,MH-CET,NIT,AIEEE and HSC competitive examinations were further split between the civic administration and the institutes.

“In the last four years, none of the BMC school students who attended these junior colleges has been able to secure admission to IIT-based programmes. These institutes charge Rs 50,000 per student,” said civic education committee chairman Manoj Kotak.

“The HSC exam results for civic school students in each college were good, with the pass percentage being 98. However, the number of students securing admission to IIT programmes was few,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner Mohan Adtani.

On choosing a rival coaching class for the Dadar college,Adtani said,“We have been paying the annual fees, which includes costs for normal junior college science stream classes and coaching for IIT-JEE entrance exams. We have now decided to try another coaching institute for the Dadar college. Here, they are offering to coach our students for free.”

Kotak said,“We are making sure that our students will be on a par with students from other private and aided schools to ensure that everyone has the same opportunities.”
