Depressed over his constant backache,an assistant professor of dentistry at the BYL Nair Hospital committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan in his residence at the government colony near Lala Lajpatrai College on Monday morning.
According to the Tardeo police, the deceased,Dr Pravin Solanki (44),was staying with his parents at the government quarters near Lala Lajpatrai College. It has come to our notice during the investigation that Solanki, who was an assistant professor of dentistry at the Nair Hospital, had been suffering from severe backache for the past six months. On Sunday night, when he had complained of extreme back pain, his father,Jeevanbhai (84),had massaged his back, after which they all went to sleep, said API Manohar Dhanawade of the Tardeo police station.
On Monday,at 4 am,when Pravins mother,Daiben (79),woke up to go to the bathroom, she saw the body of Pravin dangling from the ceiling fan in his room. Solanki used a bedspread to hang himself. He used to sleep alone in his room while his parents sleep in another room. His mother raised an alarm after seeing her sons body and informed the police, said Dhanawade.
Solanki was taken to the Nair Hospital for postmortem. The doctors have confirmed that it was an unnatural death. Solanki had divorced his wife in 2001 and had been staying with his parents ever since. In a statement, his parents have told the police that Pravin was frustrated due to his backache and had missed work on various occasions. Solanki had been attached to the Nair Hospital for the past 15 years and is survived by his parents and an elder brother who stays at Wadala.
When contacted,a friend of Solanki from the Nair Hospital said on condition of anonymity,He had taken some holidays recently citing ill health. However, from what I know,he didnt any other problems.
